“Did you know that MIT had a baseball team? Can the smartest people be good at baseball? The author tells about his senior year at the most prestigious college in the United States, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Brooks is a captain of 1993 MIT Beavers baseball team. The team has a very bad record each season. Because MIT is located in the northeast, they have to practice on indoor fields all winter. Over their spring break the MIT baseball team travels to Florida to finish of their Pre-Season. When they got on the fields for practice, they couldn’t help themselves but smell the grass. They played many games down there, almost one a day. When they got back to MIT to start the regular season, they finally got to practice outside. Throughout the season they were winning and losing games. At the end of the regular season they had 19 wins and 11 losses. The team almost never made the ECAC playoffs, but this year they did win the championship. They were ranked fifth out of eight teams. The team went on to win the championship game and wanted a seed in the NCAA playoffs.
Brooks Mendell: This man is very humble. He played pitcher, first base, and outfield. Due to his painful back injuries in 1993, he could only play outfield. Before MIT, Brooks lived in San Mateo, CA.
The theme of the book is: just because MIT is a school for only the smartest students, they know how to take their head out of their books.
I highly recommend this book for people who love baseball. It explains how you can be good at baseball and have good grades. This is a very good book for a middle school student.”
